Elder Makes Debut and Keane on Bench as Town Make Seven Changes at Accrington Saturday, 5th Jan 2019 14:20
Callum Elder makes his Town debut as manager Paul Lambert makes seven changes to the Blues side for this afternoon’s FA Cup third round tie away against League One Accrington Stanley. Town’s other new signing Will Keane is among the subs.
Bartosz Bialkowski returns in goal with Elder, who joined on loan from Wigan earlier in the week, at left-back and former Accrington man Toto Nsiala making his first appearance under Lambert at the centre of the defence alongside Matthew Pennington. Dean Gerken, Myles Kenlock and previously ever-present skipper Luke Chambers all drop to the bench. Jordan Spence continues at right-back.
Andre Dozzell and Jon Nolan join Flynn Downes in midfield with Kayden Jackson, who moved to Town from Stanley in the summer, the central striker with Freddie Sears, who will be wearing the captain’s armband for the first time, on the left and Gwion Edwards on the right.
Teddy Bishop and Jack Lankester join Keane, who signed on loan from Hull yesterday, among the subs but there is no place in the 18 for Janoi Donacien, who also joined Town from Accrington in the summer, or Jonas Knudsen, who is expected to leave during the January window.
The Blues’ last win in an FA Cup tie came back in January 2010 when they beat Blackpool 2-1 in the third round at Bloomfield Road during Roy Keane’s time in charge. Since then they have played 13 games (including replays) without recording a victory.
If Donacien can't make the bench for a cup game at his former club, what future does he have at Ipswich? I'm a big fan of Lambert, but can't help feeling that this is a mistake.
I think the unfortunate truth Berts is that signing Donacien was the mistake. He's not at the required standard unfortunately. Spence may not be the long term solution and itls the designated scapegoat at the moment but he's a better right back than Donacien who is a makeshift fullback from two divisions below. Hursts signings were awful unfortunately.
Unfortunately Terry Nutkins, I am not sure Spence would get in a L2 team. Remember he could not get a game for MK Dons. From what I have seen of Donacien he is far better than Spence, certainly at defending. I am also not sure Spence is a 'designated' scapegoat, it is just that he is so poor wek in and week out but the manager keeps picking him !!!
The fact Spence has been ever present under Lambert is a complete mystery to me would have much preferred to have seen Donacien there who the few times I have seen him play at right back I have felt has performed creditably
team looked very miserable before kick off. Suppose I can understand why, but surely as a team you have to know how to motivate each other. Come 5pm think I'm going to be as miserable. will love them win lose or draw :-)
apparently it's the magic of the FA Cup. Our record in the cup is poo to say the least. Just look at our body language from beginning to end. Mr Lambert needs to have a bigger word with owner
