Match Preview: Oldham Athletic vs Bradford City

Oldham Athletic are hosting promotion chasing Bradford City as both sides enter the game in desperate need of three points.

Oldham are currently 22nd in League One four points away from safety and head into the clash hoping for their first win in 11 league matches. Patrick McEleney is out for 4 weeks which rules him out the game but new signing Wilfried Moimbé is likely to be handed his debut for the club. Also, Wellens resigned fan favourite Eoin Doyle on loan until the end of the season but is unable to feature until March due to injury. Last weekend, Oldham was condemned to a 2-1 defeat at home by Plymouth Argyle

Bradford sit 5th in League One and Stuart McCall’s side enter the game following four back to back defeats against  Northampton, Bristol Rovers, Rotherham and AFC Wimbledon. The Bantams have had a busy transfer window adding Ryan McGowan, Matty Lund, Stephen Warnock, Callum Guy and German striker Kai Bruenker to the squad.

Latics boss Richie Wellens spoke to the club website about the upcoming fixture “It’s not always easy to say that it’s a good time to play them, they’ll be smarting from a home defeat by AFC Wimbledon and they’ll want a reaction. They’ve made three signings so the team will change and that might give them a lift.

Wellens added “They’re a very good club, it will be a difficult game but I’m hoping that the atmosphere here will be lifted and will be a bit better than it has been in recent weeks. There will be lot of fans here and I’m hoping they can lift our players as well.”

During the week Stuart McCall urged Bantams not to throw away 18 months of progress following an abysmal January, the Bantams boss admitted to Telegraph and Argus “There’s no getting away from the fact that January has been abysmal. It’s also a fact that our home form this season has been abysmal. The number of goals we’ve conceded has been abysmal.”

“We’ve got to make sure January has gone. We can’t revisit it and must turn it round in February. I’m confident we can go to Oldham and get a result. We’ve got to believe – and I do believe – that this can still be a successful season. We’ve had a huge slump and we’ve got to get out of it. I’d say we’ve got to get a minimum four points from the next two games.”

“I think the club have progressed on the pitch in the 18 months we’ve been in. But we don’t want to throw 18 months of progression this club have had on the pitch down the spout in one month. It’s a huge challenge. I’m not naive – I know that if we don’t get results in the next couple of games then I won’t be here.”

Last Meeting – Bradford City (Taylor 3′) 1-1 Oldham Athletic (Doyle 23′)
