Bolton v Barnsley preview

Bolton take a comfortable 3-1 lead into the second leg of their play-off semi final, with Randell Williams' 94th minute goal giving them a comfortable two-goal lead, to put one foot in next Saturday's Wembley final for promotion to the Championship.

Ian Evatt's side ended the regular season in much the better form out of the two sides, and now head into the second leg unbeaten in their last eight matches with just one defeat since February, securing themselves a third place finish.

The Trotters are looking to achieve promotion back to the second tier for the first time since 2019, having spent three years in League One following their promotion back to the League Two.

Play-off victory over Barnsley on Tuesday night would act as revenge having lost to the same opponents at the same stage of last season.

Barnsley's defeat in their home leg last weekend leaves them without a win in seven games, of which they've lost five.

The slump in form saw the Yorkshire side slip to sixth in the table, setting up a tough semi-final date with Bolton, which also saw the sacking of Neill Collins as their manager with just one match of the season remaining.

Assistant manager Martin Devaney took over as caretaker manager ahead of the final game of the season, earning a 1-1 draw with mid-table Northampton before suffering their first leg semi final on Friday.

Barnsley have won just one of their last six matches against Bolton, and head into Tuesday's second leg as heavy underdogs in their bid to return to the Championship after two seasons in the third tier, finishing as defeated finalists in last year's play-offs.

📝 Bolton v Barnsley betting tips

Sky Bet are promoting their own statistically backed BuildABet ahead of the first of the League One play-off semi final second legs, offering 25/1 on Barnsley to take 5+ corners, Josh Dacres-Cogley to commit 2+ fouls and Adam Phillips to score.

"The corner count hit 11 in the first leg with Barnsley taking six of them, and with game state going against them, they have every chance of reaching that same marker again.

"Josh Dacres-Cogley committed three fouls in his Friday trip to Oakwell, while no player on the pitch could better Adam Phillips’ total of six shots."
